At the start of a two day teambuilding / staff challenge and just two hours before the closure of the Eurotunnel, due to the fire on September 11th, our French teams arrived safely at St Pancras station - already it was looking as if we had been lucky, and things just got better.
The GDF SUEZ DEP Challenge was hosted in the UK and was designed to encourage teamwork, camaraderie and to cement cross border relations between the highly skilled workforces. Using the Madejski Millennium hotel as our base, the pan European teams arrived, registered and received their team briefing bags, together with T shirts and event programmes.
The first evening was spent relaxing at the wonderful Trunkwell Manor, enjoying a very informal dinner, with lots of opportunity to catch up and discuss tactics for the next day's activities.
Day two saw the first round of activities with mixed country teams competing over a series of challenges that included: Human Table Football, Lazer Quest, 'Blind' Quad bike driving, Grass Kart time trials, Archery and Space Hopper Derby. Any threat of rain wasn't forthcoming, the teams worked well together and by the BBQ lunch break the competetive spirit was well and truly alight!
Just when we thought everything was perfect - the good old British Summer kicked in with a torrential downpour, however this only added to the the fun of the afternoon's It's A Knockout Challenge and spirits were definitely NOT dampened.
In country teams, the contestants battled it out over 2.5 hours until the final scores were submitted and we had our 2008 Champions. The results however were not to be revealed until later that evening...
After a relaxing rest at the hotel it was time to be transported to our secret gala evening location, a private island in the Thames. The theme was medieval Britain and with feuding Knights, Court Jester, Strolling Minstrals and two very impressive jugglers. The evening allowed everyone to sample real ale, mead and
a menu that included: spit roast lamb - racks of ribs - individual poussain. After the dinner came the extremely serious business of announcing the winners who were........The German team and by some quirk of fate the location was announced for next year's event and that location is.....Germany!
The programme concluded with guests debating the scoring process, whilst dancing the night away and planning for the 2009 challenge!
We just decided to go bananas!................
and so did they!
and so did he!
